Put a couple hundred hours on a stock Crack before putting the speedball in. I never made it to putting the speedball in. It just sounded too good the way it was. Speedball makes a big difference, especially with the “wall of noise”. Speedball, choke, and output capacitors were significant mods for my crack. It’s been a long time since I listened to a crack though, especially a stock one. Clean and tight bass isn’t one of the crack’s strengths. Bottlehead Crack Coppermine Edition I’m going to guess that the Crack is Bottlehead’s all time most popular kit. A great little tube headphone amplifier at a price-point nearly anyone can afford that sounds very good for the money, it’s really hard to go wrong here. As mentioned earlier, the Speedball is a constant current source. I've recently completed building my Bottlehead Crack HP amp and I'm very happy with it. I'm currently using a fairly basic DAC (Musical Fidelity VDAC) which I purchased several years ago and, not being used, had it in storage. HPs are Sennheiser 650s. The VDAC does a reasonable job of most PCM material but does not process DSD files.

Hey.

So I've been looking forward to stepping my game up, and after a month of research, I found that the 650's are exactly what I want.

However I'm struggling with the selection of a tube amp to drive them before I order them.

I have always thought that I preferred bright sound, by recently I've wanted to try the warm sound of a tube amp.

Bottlehead Crack With Speedball Reviews

I'm looking for a neutral but fun to listen sound. Prioritizing fun over clarity. I'm not looking for an analytic sound

I've heard they are both great, but I would like to hear everyone's opinion on both of 'em or how do they pair with the 650's

One pretty big point to consider is that the Crack is currently on a pretty decent sale. Meaning that I could get the Crack + Speedball for the same price than the Valhalla 2.
